As well as providing the superb illustrations for Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, Paul Kidby produces fine bronzes.
'Obsidian', his latest creation can now be seen in the gallery. Pictured here, this stunning sculpture is number 5 of a limited edition of only 12 and is set on a polished marble base measuring approx. 30 inches. I expect the edition will sell quickly, so whether I will be able to secure another remains to be seen.
He comes at a price, but worth every penny

Stephen Bishop

Stephen delivered 4 superb paintings to the gallery this week including this spectacular piece called 'The Collector.' This is one of his continuing series exploring time shifts which were first featured in The ARThouse Gallery's solo exhibition of Stephen's work last year entitled 'Other World'. Measuring 4 feet wide it depicts our friends from the past, passing through a modern day scene with a woman and child. Great stuff.
It goes on the wall tomorrow....

Fred Yates

Have recently purchased a particularly nice West Country painting by Fred Yates. Fred died in 2008 and his work is becoming very collectable. This oil on board depicts the ferry at Fowey and is approx. 24 inches wide. It is signed but not dated. I have spoken to a highly regarded art historian, who was also a friend of Fred Yates and he advises that this in all probability would have been painted in the early 1970's, a period he regards as when Fred produced his best work. Offers invited.

Had a visit from Peter Joyce and his wife Jo this afternoon who came all the way from their home in France to bring these 5 great paintings into the gallery. (They might have had a couple of other things to do while they were over here).

London Art Fair

Went to the London Art Fair in Islington yesterday which I think is the best of all the large exhibitions. Good to see a large number of artists who have work here in TheARThouse Gallery represented. Must be doing something right!

Also collected my most recent purchase whilst I was up there, a remarkable lithograph by Graham Sutherland - "Ram's Head (Rocks & Skeletons) 1968" - pictured here.
The Art World sent Sutherland into the wilderness for a while, but his work kept popping up on various galleries' stands in London, so perhaps he is about to become favoured once more. Better go and buy some more.
Our cheerful friend is off to the framers shortly - should be back in the gallery in a couple of weeks if you want to buy him - or just pick a fight with him.

Mike Braisher ceramics

Wide selection of ceramics by Mike Braisher now in the gallery.
Would make great Christmas presents if you could bear to part with them. To give a sense of scale, the large banqueting charger on the left is 28 ins. diameter and the pitchers around 15 ins. high. All the pieces are substantial and are beautifully finished; the majority feature an ammonite motif.
Prices range from £85 to £500.

6 great paintings of Dorset and Moroccan scenes now in the gallery and on the website from Gerry Dudgeon.

Born in Darjeeling, India in 1952 Gerry studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art, gaining a first class Honours degree in 1979, and then an MFA postgraduate degree from Reading University in 1981. After a travelling scholarship to New York, he worked in London as a painter in studios at the Barbican and Brixton before moving to West Dorset in 1987.

With the Dorset series, his experience of working on archaeological excavations manifests itself both in the scraping and wiping back of the paint surface to reveal underlying layers and in his fascination with Dorset’s ancient geological past.

Travels to the mountains and deserts of Morocco have allowed him to explore colour relationships in a series of semi-abstract landscapes, which evoke the light and heat of remote Berber villages, characterised by their mud-built architecture.

Awards
1981 Boise Travelling Scholarship to New York.
1993 Research Award to visit India from Surrey University.

Gerry Dudgeon now exhibits widely in the south of England including London, and works have been purchased privately outside Britain in USA, Canada, Kuwait, India and Europe. He has written articles for The Artist and Artists & Illustrators magazines and has exhibited regularly at the RWA, New English Art Club and RA Summer Exhibitions.

The 'White Christmas' Exhibition line up is looking utterly amazing.

As well as pieces specially commissioned by the gallery for the show from leading contemporary artists such as Martyn Brewster, Claire Wiltsher, Stephen Bishop, Teresa Lawton, Catherine Barnes, Richard Price, Robert Woolner, Nell Race and Susan Michie, we have arranged a for a superb selection of works by internationally known modern artists through the Mayfair gallery Osborne Samuel.

It will be a great privilege to display works for sale by the likes of Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, Sir Terry Frost, George Dannatt, Howard Hodgkin, Lyn Chadwick, Prunella Clough and Kenneth Armitage. To my knowledge Bournemouth has never before hosted such an event in a commercial gallery.

The show will run from the 8th of December, so plenty of time to call in to buy something truly special for your nearest and dearest this Christmas.

Been a good week all round, amongst a number of other good sales have sold the 2 Miro lithographs. Will be very sorry to part with them, but at least they're off to a new home where the new owner truly appreciates them.

Despite the gallery being closed for the majority of August, to my utter amazement it turned out to be the best ever month for sales so far. This was due to website enquiries leading to home consultations or private appointments to view particular works in the gallery.

Claire Wiltsher's magnificent painting 'Silence' was one such case (shown here).

I have opened this 'blog' page with a view to mentioning day to day events in connection with the gallery, so what better way to kick off than to tell you that the gallery was closed today and here are a few pix showing "Security Division's" walk around Hengistbury Head.

Have included 2 photos of some interesting art found on the cliff-face. Not sure how many million years they have been waiting to be exposed. Early Brian Grahams' perhaps?

The gallery will be back to normal opening next week.
